Healthy hair is rooted in scalp care. We don’t make the rules, it’s just a fact. The long-term health of your hair all starts with caring for your scalp and intentionally using formulas that give it what it needs to thrive. Full stop.
If your scalp is inflamed, itchy, and covered in buildup or dandruff, your hair’s health is compromised. Clogged, irritated hair follicles can’t properly absorb nutrients or grow healthy hair, which can lead to hair thinning or loss, and literally no one wants that.
Here at Briogeo, we liken having a healthy scalp care routine to having a great skin care routine because ultimately, your scalp is a continuation of your skin and needs the same caliber of care. Just like with your face, scalp exfoliation helps remove impurities, moisturization keeps hydration levels in balance—and caring for your scalp with these steps will help create the optimal environment for healthy hair growth.
Similarly, the same way your skin could be dry, normal, combination, or oily, your scalp also falls into a category, and determining your scalp type will help you properly care for it. Discover your scalp type below, then create a specially curated routine featuring our Scalp Revival™ collection.

What are the three basic scalp types?
Dry scalps can often feel itchy, flaky, tight and/or irritated. If you have a dry, flaky scalp or itchy scalp, you may find yourself frequently washing your hair to remove debris and flakes. Or your hair may feel dry a day or two after washing because your scalp is absorbing excess oil in an attempt to stay moisturized.
Oily scalps experience an overproduction of sebum (aka oil). If your scalp is oily, your hair may look and feel greasy and flat just a day after washing, which may lead you to washing your hair even more frequently.
Balanced/normal scalps feel well-hydrated and don’t show signs of excess oil, flakes, or irritation. If you have a balanced scalp, you can typically let your hair go about three days between washes (and with dry shampoo, maybe even longer!).
How does dehydration affect my scalp and hair?
Dehydration affects your body in many ways. When your skin and scalp lose too much water—whether it be through evaporation, dry air, or insufficient water intake—it can trigger the body to overcompensate by producing extra oil. This excess oil production is produced to create an additional barrier to protect the skin and scalp from environmental harm or damage while doing its best to lock in any remaining moisture. You may have a dehydrated scalp if you experience:
Irritation and itchiness
Inflammation
Dandruff (dry flakes in your hair)
Dry, cracked, and/or damaged skin
It's also worth noting that a dehydrated scalp can actually cause your hair to look greasy. Your skin’s protective measure of producing that excess sebum can weigh down your hair, making it look and feel oily and flat.

What’s a good dry scalp treatment to help with dehydration?
We recommend using formulas that are enriched with hydrating humectant ingredients, which help the skin balance out its oil production and restore essential moisture.
Our Scalp Revival™ Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil is an expertly formulated moisturizing treatment that you can use before wash-day to support a healthy, hydrated scalp. It’s created with rosemary, vitamins, and lipids and helps to soothe your scalp and strengthen strands, which encourages longer hair.
If you have a dehydrated scalp, try our new Scalp Revival™ Charcoal + Tea Tree Cooling Scalp Mask—it’s is fortified with hydrating Aloe Vera and Hyaluronic Acid, which are both natural humectants that help restore a dehydrated scalp’s essential moisture and balance oil production.
