What is the 'Skinification' of Hair?

The practice of a skincare routine is all but regular to our self-care regimens, and in the world of haircare, it’s taking new roots. The “skinification” of hair is more than just a growing trend—it’s a movement with serious staying power and is essential to healthy hair.

Skinification makes a strong connection between powerful ingredients, transformative treatments, the benefits of our skincare routine, and how they relate to our hair care. The rise in skincare has extended beyond face wash, toners, and moisturizers—and extended to gua sha, exfoliation, facial steamers, masking, and (our personal favorite) personalized skin care routines. It begs the question: Why aren’t we caring for our scalps with the same intention we’re caring for our skin?

Did you know your scalp is an extension of the skin on your face? Or that your hair is its healthiest when growing from a healthy scalp? All these reasons (and many more) inspired us to create simplified scalp care solutions, and so our Scalp Revival™ collection was born.

Scalp Concerns Meets Skinification

Let’s begin by talking about scalp conditions. If your scalp is dry, itchy, inflamed, and covered in buildup, it directly affects the health of your hair. Clogged, irritated hair follicles can’t properly absorb nutrients or grow healthy hair, which can eventually lead to hair thinning and hair loss.

It’s also worth noting that the pores on our scalp are also susceptible to congestion and inflammation, just like our facial pores. Our scalps crave the same rituals as our skin to support an ideal environment for optimal hair health:

Exfoliation to remove impurities.

Hydration to help balance moisture and oil production.

Nourishment to promote healthy hair growth.

Protection from UV and free radical damage.

Exfoliation Is Key

An exfoliation routine is fundamental for scalp health, especially if your scalp is dry, irritated or inflamed. Here’s why:

When your scalp is imbalanced it can cause excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, and poor nutrient absorption, which can eventually lead to hair thinning and hair loss

Cleansing the top layer of your scalp removes dead skin cells to reveal a fresh layer of clean, vibrant skin and removes any barriers that prevent our pores from releasing natural oils.

Dead skin cells impede your scalp health and contribute to build up.

Skincare-like ingredients in Scalp Care

Our CEO and Founder, Nancy Twine, created our Scalp Revival™ collection—a specially formulated product line enriched with our NOVA Complex®—with a deeply nurturing blend of ingredients to provide the essential care your scalp craves. You may recognize many of these ingredients, because they are often found in skincare products as well:

Binchotan Charcoal detoxifies the scalp and draws out impurities that clog the hair follicle or create buildup on the scalp

Salicylic Acid eliminates and prevents recurring scalp itching, irritation, redness, and flaking due to dandruff, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis

Lactic Acid provides gentle exfoliation on the scalp

Coconut Oil moisturizes the scalp

Panthenol and B Vitamins strengthen the hair root

Peppermint + Spearmint Oils soothe irritation with a cooling effect

Rosemary Oil stimulates and encourages scalp circulation

Witch Hazel balances oil production

By harnessing the power of natural oils, vitamins, and antioxidants, your hair and scalp has everything it needs to support long-term hair health.

Experience a Scalp Revival™

Extending your skincare routine to your scalp also extends to the treatments you prioritize outside of your routine maintenance.

Exfoliation to decongest pores, remove dead skin cells and build up to allow for better product performance

Masking for deep hydration

Serums and oils to lock in moisture and provide protection from free radicals

UV and heat (from styling) protection to prevent harmful damage from the sun and heat styling.

Now that you’re in the know on all things scalp health, it’s time to begin building your routine.
