Hair Oiling 101

Whether you’re an avid follower of hair trends or just looking for a new way to nourish your locks, you may have noticed a lot of conversation around hair oiling. While it may seem like a new TikTok trend for many, the practice of hair and scalp oiling has actually been around for over 5000 years, originating in India as part of Ayurvedic wellness traditions.

So what is hair oiling and why should I be doing it?

Hair oiling is quite literally the process of saturating your hair and scalp with a nutrient-rich oil and letting it absorb for some time before shampooing it out. You can also combine the oil application with a scalp massage to increase blood flow and stimulate the scalp. The length of time you allow the oil to sit will depend on your routine and your goals - for some, 10-15 minutes can be enough to see the benefits. For those with a bit more time, an overnight oiling treatment can provide truly transformational results.

Incorporating oiling into your routine regularly can have incredible benefits for both the hair and scalp. A good oil provides moisturization and conditioning benefits to the strands, increasing softness, shine + manageability, and can help balance and moisturize the scalp, alleviating dryness and irritation.

Want even more out of your oil? Look for oils that have additional hair + scalp healthy ingredients, like Briogeo’s new Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil, loaded with scalp-stimulating rosemary, soothing tea tree, strand-strengthening biotin, and nourishing castor oil. In a consumer perception study, 97% of people agree their scalp feels more moisturized and soothed*, 94% reported soft hair*, 91% felt their hair is stronger* and 100% agreed their scalp felt comfortable all after the first use*.

So how do I use a hair oil?

Incorporating hair oiling into your routine is easier than you might think. Once a week, section dry hair and apply a few drops of Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil to the scalp, massaging as you go and pulling the oil down from roots to ends. If needed, apply a few more drops of oil to the hands and distribute through the lengths of the hair, paying special attention to any dry areas, like the ends. Pro tip: use Briogeo’s Stimulating Therapy Massager to massage the oil into the scalp for additional stimulation.

Allow the oil to absorb for at least 10-15 minutes, or, for an even deeper treatment, let it sit overnight - just be sure to wrap your hair in a scarf or bonnet to protect your pillow from staining and protect your strands from attracting dirt. In the morning, wash your hair with your favorite Briogeo shampoo + conditioner and enjoy soft, shiny strands and a soothed, comfortable scalp!
