It has been said to invest in our hair, it’s the crown we never take off.
As someone with type 4B curls, it has been a journey to find products that work to enhance my natural texture. Growing up as a woman of color, I often felt pressured to conform to European standards of beauty. I’d spend hours in the salon to straighten my hair; lye relaxers, flat irons and pressing combs, obsessed with achieving sleekness. I cringed when my curly roots would start to grow in. My hair was bone straight, but it lacked luster and volume.
5 years ago, I decided to big chop, in which I cut all of my hair off, to jumpstart my natural hair journey. In hindsight, I realized that I didn’t ‘go’ natural but rather I returned to my hair in its natural state. Going natural symbolized starting fresh and creating a healthier start for my curls. It also meant improving my self-confidence, as I could no longer hide behind my hair, while creating my own definition of beauty.
Briogeo’s Curl Charisma collection has allowed me to reclaim my curls and shed old notions of beauty. Each product from the collection is formulated with ingredients such as avocado oil, shea butter, and rice amino acids which help to nourish and enhance curls from wavy to kinky/coily.
Briogeo’s website offers a short quiz that takes the guesswork out of mixing products to offer customized and simplified routines to volumize, repair, defrizz, or nurture.
In totality, all Briogeo products also contain the signature NOVA complex; natural oils, vitamins, and antioxidants that not only help to address immediate concerns but also help to build the foundation for healthy and nourished hair. Their 6-free philosophy also means each product are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, DEA, and synthetic fragrances.
As a consumer, you can also feel good about its sourcing and ethics as all products are vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free. Further, Briogeo products are packaged in recyclable plastic containers which also clearly delineate the exact percentage of naturally derived ingredients and its source, keeping consumers educated and informed.
For me, I enjoy washing and conditioning my hair with the rice amino + avocado hydrating shampoo and rice amino + shea curl defining conditioner. The shampoo helps to remove dirt and product build-up without stripping curls of its natural oils and adds softness without weighing my curls down. The conditioner provides slip to detangle and helps to define and de-frizz my textured hair.
I then apply the rice amino + avocado leave-in defining crème, coating each strand thoroughly with a wide-toothed comb. This curl defining crème adds extra hydration while weather-proofing my curls by sealing the cuticle and locking out humidity-induced frizz. Avocado oil helps to increase elasticity while protecting against damage.
My last step is styling with the chia + flax seed coil custard; a thick, creamy, and hydrating styler that provides curl definition and shine with a flexible hold. I usually like to style my hair in protective styles, either flat-twists and two-strand twists, that I wear for a few days before unraveling soft, defined and voluminous curls that can be extended into different styles.
Curly hair is not a trend, it is a lifestyle and whether you have fine and wavy hair or thick and coily hair such as mine, I applaud Briogeo for creating a prestige hair care line that encompasses and celebrates all types and textures of hair.
