Is Curly Hair More Prone to Dandruff?

All hair types and textures are susceptible to flakes and dandruff. However, due to the natural structure of waves, curls, and coils, textured hair types are more prone to experiencing dryness and dandruff.

Your hair follicles set the stage for your hair type. Round hair follicles create straight hair (type 1 hair), while oval- and twisted-shaped follicles create waves, curls, and coils (type 2a-4c hair).

The structure of  waves, curls, and coils are in a category of their own when it comes to hair and scalp care. Curly hair is more susceptible to breakage and damage, and when curly hair becomes damaged, the hair cuticle lifts making the hair dry and brittle. Your gorgeous hair type requires its own set of TLC rules—and that’s why pinning down a routine that works with your unique hair concerns and needs is so important to help your textured tresses thrive.

The first step in understanding why your hair and scalp is more prone to dandruff is understanding your specific hair structure and how that plays a role in your disposition towards dandruff.

Let’s take a look at the reasons why your textured hair may be more vulnerable to dandruff. Plus, we have a super powerful-yet-gentle routine that combines our Scalp Revival™ and Curl Charisma™ collections just for you! It will help to treat and control flakes, dryness, and irritation, leaving you with enviable and dandruff-free waves, curls, and coils.

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is a type of dermatitis (seborrheic dermatitis) that is extremely common and develops from the overgrowth of yeast, seasonal changes, stress, and hormonal imbalances. It appears in areas like our face and scalp where sebaceous glands become inflamed and produce:

- Flaking

- White or yellow scales

- Itchiness

- Reddened skin

Why is curly hair more prone to dandruff?

Type 2a-4c can be more prone to dandruff for a variety of reasons:

Textured strands can take more breaks between wash days. Dandruff isn’t an indicator of poor hygiene, however less time between wash days allows for the yeast responsible for dandruff to hang out on your scalp for a longer time.

2a-4c hair doesn’t allow your natural hair oils to travel down the length of your hair shaft, so there’s more oils for yeast-causing dandruff to nibble on.
- Oils that can’t travel down the hair shaft can also lead to a dry, flaky, irritated, and painful scalp

Waves, curls, and coils prefer less manipulation and styling. If you’re wearing your hair in a protective style or keeping your hands off your signature high bun or ponytail for many days in a row, you might not be brushing or combing your hair often. This may lead to an over-accumulation of dandruff-loving yeast.
