Pro Tips: Extend the Life of Your Hair Color

Are you tired of spending time and money on touching up your hair color every couple of weeks? If your hair color seems to be fading just after a few washes, there are several reasons why. Here’s a look at how to extend the life of your hair color:

Hair Color 101: The Difference Between Semi-permanent & Permanent Hair Color:

Semi-Permanent Color

If you’re looking to change your hair color without ammonia or peroxide, semi-permanent color may be right for you. Semi-permanent only darkens hair, it does not lighten hair color. It works by depositing hair color on the outside of the hair shaft. It washes out in about 6-12 shampoo washes.

Permanent Color

If you’re looking to either permanently darken or lighten your hair, permanent hair color is your best option. Permanent color works by first removing the original color by opening the hair cuticle, and then depositing the new color into the hair.

Wash With Cool Water

While shampooing and conditioning, keep the water turned down to a cooler temperature. Hot water and steam can open the hair cuticles, allowing hair color molecules to release, causing a faster rate of color fading.

Use a Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Sulfates are harsh detergents that strip dye from strands, causing the color to quickly fade. If you want to preserve the life of your hair color, avoid shampoos with sulfates. The best option? Our new Color Me Brilliant collection is not only sulfate-free but is also scientifically proven to reduce color fading up to 10 washes.

Commonly Used Sulfates to Avoid in Your Shampoo:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES)
  • Ammonia (Laureth) Sulphate (ALS)
  • TEA Lauryeth Sulfate (TEA)
  • Sodium Myreth Sulphate (SMS)

Our Color Me Brilliant mushroom + bamboo color protect shampoo & conditioner are fortified with a plant-based complex that blends turkey tail mushroom, a vegan keratin protein alternative, and bamboo to protect and strengthen the hair. This duo works to add shine, coat and defend against unwanted color fading.

How to use: Apply shampoo to wet hair and vigorously massage from root to tip, then rinse. After shampooing, dispense the conditioner and apply evenly through the length of your hair. Let sit for two minutes before rinsing.

Prep Your Hair Before Heat Styling

The third step in this color-protecting process is prepping your hair for any heat styling with our Color Me Brilliant mushroom + bamboo color protect primer. After using the Color Me Brilliant shampoo and conditioner, using this liquid gold prior to air drying or heat styling will lock in that rich hair color, protect hair from damage and promote healthy and nourished locks.

How to use: Dispense a dime-sized amount into hands and work through the hair from root to tip prior to air drying or heat styling. Do not rinse out.

Deep Condition

Using a deep conditioning mask before and after coloring your hair will help prevent chemical damage + lock in your color. Our Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep conditioning mask is fortified with hair-loving ingredients like avocado, sweet almond & argan oils, keratin protein, rosehip oil, aloe, vitamins B5, D, A and biotin.

How to use: After shampooing, massage into the hair, ensuring the conditioner is evenly applied. Leave in for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. For even deeper conditioning, cover the hair in a plastic cap to retain moisture while sitting under the dryer for 30 minutes, then rinse. Use this deep conditioning mask once per week or every two weeks.
