Briogeo Brand Ambassador Ashley Hall completely relates to the stress that can come with detangling curly hair. After years of trying different tools and strategies she has finally perfected the art of no fuss detangling. Read her blog to find three easy and quick ways for no fuss detangling so you can focus on enjoying your beautiful hair!
Washday can be a tiring process especially when it’s time to detangle. Detangling curly hair is not an easy task, but it does not have to be a chore. Having the right products and mindset should be enough to get you through a detangling session without ripping your hair out—literally.
Curly hair is very delicate and needs to be handled with care especially when it’s time to detangle. Improper detangling methods can wreak havoc on curls by causing strands to snap mid-shaft (breakage) or be ripped out from the root. Curly girls need products with copious amounts of slip as well as time and patience to detangle successfully. Here are my top three strategies I use for no fuss detangling and the products I use to make the magic happen!
1. Deep Condition First:
For no fuss detangling, I recommend eliminating tangles after using the Don’t Despair, Repair! Mask. It contains emollients-- ingredients that provide slip-- in the form of fatty alcohols (Stearyl Alcohol & Cetyl Alcohol) and Cetrimonium Chloride, which helps to condition the hair's cuticle. The DDR Mask also contains Hydrolyzed Proteins (Keratin, Collagen & Silk) which help strengthen the hair against breakage. In other words, this mask provides much needed moisture and strength to curls, which makes detangling a cinch!
2. Detangle in Sections:
Detangling in sections helps to eliminate confusion and a prolonged detangling session. By separating your hair into 4 sections or more (depending on the density & length), you are able to successfully detangle a section and keep it out of the way rather than trying to detangle your whole head at once and risking new tangles. This will also decrease unnecessary pulling and unwanted breakage. After you're done with the section, twist it or clip it out of the way. Always remember to take your time when detangling-- work from the bottom up and be gentle!
3. Detangle Hair When Wet:
For curlies who skip the deep conditioning step, detangling with the Curl Charisma Curl Defining Conditioner also works well. After applying the Curl Charisma conditioner, allow the shower stream to evenly distribute the product, separate your hair into sections, and finger detangle starting from the tips up. I would recommend finger detangling first then using a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush after the section is completed. Since the Curl Charisma conditioner helps to define, de-frizz, and enhance curls, the detangling tool will help clump curls and give them that extra pop!
Those three steps will go a long way in taking the stress out of washday. Always remember, a positive attitude and a little patience are also great solutions!
