This is what causes color fade (and how to prevent it)

Coloring your hair can be such a fun and exciting way to amp up both your locks and your overall look. The ability to go from brown to blonde to blue on a whim allows you a freedom of expression that lasts longer than a great new lipstick, but is less permanent than a tattoo!

What causes color fade in color-treated hair?

If you dye your hair on a regular basis, though, then you already know that even the most permanent of hair colors requires extra maintenance to help your hue stay vibrant for longer and prevent fading. Throughout our daily lives, there are many factors in our daily routines that can contribute to color fade:

- Frequent washing: Washing your hair too often can strip it of its glossy shine and vibrancy, especially if you’re using a sulfate-based shampoo.

UV rays: We know the sun can cause skin damage and can even dehydrate your hair, but it can also cause your color to fade quicker.

Heat styling: Too much heat from your favorite flat or curling iron can cause your color to become dull and lose its vibrancy (especially with repeated use and no heat protectant).

Tips for protecting color-treated hair

After spending all that time and money at the salon to achieve the color you want, the goal is to keep your hue looking vibrant for as long as possible. Since running out for regular professional touch-ups is not a sustainable solution, you can follow these pro tips to keep your hair healthy and your beautiful color free from fading:

- Cleanse gently: Always cleanse and condition your strands with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that are specifically formulated to help prevent color fade. Our new Color Me Brilliant Mushroom + Bamboo Color Protect Shampoo and Conditioner are not only sulfate-free, but feature a unique Color Protection Complex of Turkey Tail Mushroom and Bamboo Extract that work synergistically to preserve color vibrancy and protect color fade.

- Protect your hair from the sun: Our Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture 3-in-1 Leave-In Spray delivers UV protection to your strands with a few sprays, courtesy of the naturally powerful ingredient Sunflower Sprout Extract.

- Always use a heat protectant: Whether it’s a blow-dryer, a straightener, or a curling iron, whenever you use heat on your color-treated hair, make sure to prep your hair first by applying heat protection. Our new Color Me Brilliant Mushroom + Bamboo Color Protect Primer features the same Color Protection Complex as the shampoo and conditioner, plus it has the added benefits of protecting hair against thermal heat damage up to 450°F.

Whether you’re heading to the salon for a natural balayage, an icy-platinum blonde, or deciding between blue or purple, make sure to care for your color afterward with the NEW Color Me Brilliant collection to help your vibrant hue go the extra mile.
