3 Reasons Why You Need a Silk Pillowcase

We’ve all heard of getting some “beauty sleep,” and silk pillowcases are here to make sure that's exactly what you get. Silk pillowcases are just as they sound – pillowcases made of pure silk. These beauty sleep aids are said to have many benefits, such as protecting the hair from breakage, preventing wrinkles and fighting against dry hair & skin. We’re here to tell you what they’re all about, and if you should believe the hype.

The Problem With Cotton Pillowcases

While a freshly washed cotton pillowcase feels soft and cozy, this type of fabric can actually leave your skin and hair feeling more dehydrated due to its absorbent texture. Cotton can potentially soak up those pricey sleeping masks and overnight hair treatments that you know and love. Also, when the skin is not properly moisturized and is also experiencing friction against the pillow, this can cause those prints you see on your face and potentially even create fine lines and wrinkles over time… I think the word you're looking for is “nope.”

The material of the pillow also creates friction against the hair follicle that can lead to frizz and breakage. It also can absorb the moisture out of the hair follicle, similar to how it absorbs the natural oils from your skin. The friction from the cotton material also can disrupt your blowout since the material doesn’t let your hair move as easily.

What are the benefits?

Silk pillowcases are known to have a number of benefits. Here are the main 3 that convinced us to make the switch.

  1. Since silk has a much gentler and smoother texture, there is far less friction between the pillow and your hair. This means less breakage, less frizz and more flawless hair when you wake up.
  2. Silk pillowcases are also amazing for the skin, especially if yours is more on the sensitive side. Not only is it a hypoallergenic material, but it also won’t absorb the natural moisture (or your beloved nighttime moisturizer) from your face.
  3. As we age, so does our skin. One of the unfortunate parts of aging is that your skin produces less collagen. The collagen your body produces is what gives your skin elasticity, making it look more youthful. When we stop producing as much collagen, the skin doesn’t bounce back from nightly friction we can experience from a cotton pillow. The softer texture of silk causes less friction on the face, which means it’s less likely to cause fine lines, wrinkles and those annoying creases you see in the morning.

One of our personal favorite silk pillowcases is actually a vegan silk alternative from Ettitude. This 100% Bamboo Lyocell pillowcase is similar to silk, but not as shiny and slippery. This material is made with high eco-standards and uses a closed-loop system that recycles and reuses water to minimize waste. Bonus: It's extremely breathable, hypoallergenic, antimicrobial and temperature regulating. You're welcome in advance.

Another silk product we're obsessed with is our Paradise Pink satin scarf. Wrap your locks with this stylish, vegan-friendly, satin scarf. Slip it on before bed, tie it back during the day, or wear it around your neck for a simple yet chic look. Its silky, light-weight fabric is gentle on all hair types and helps reduce frizz and works to prevent tangled tresses!
