Self-Care 101: Everything You Need for the Perfect At-Home Spa Day

We can’t think of a better way to practice some self-love than creating the ultimate at-home spa day. Since we're smack dab in the middle of winter, it’s the perfect excuse to ditch social media and warm your soul while soaking in bubbles. So what do you need on-hand to pull off the best at-home spa day ever? We’ve compiled our favorite ideas to provide you with a little inspiration:

1. Bubbles.

What would a bubble bath be without the bubbles? Bubble baths are one of our key rituals to wind down and de-stress from a long day. There's truly something special about immersing yourself in a cozy, warm tub surrounded by the alluring scents of your favorite bath-time essentials. Our current bubble bath of choice is the Muse Bath Ritual Bubble Bath in Fleur Du Lavender. This spa day necessity is plant-based, vegan, cruelty + chemical free, and smells like lavender heaven. If you want to double down on bubbles, you could always pop a bottle of champagne, too... #TreatYourself.

2. Add Epsom Salt.

Epsom salts are just magnesium sulfate, renowned for their healing properties, including soothing aching muscles, relieving stress, increasing your circulation and detoxifying your skin. You can also use it to make a soothing foot bath after a long day in stilettos. One of our favorites is the Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Salt Anti-Fatigue Exfoliating Body Scrub from REN Clean Skincare. The best part about this clean at Sephora must-have is that it doubles as a body scrub! To use it for your bath, you simply massage it onto clean, dry skin, and then immerse yourself in your luxurious at-home spa bath.

3. Set the Mood.

You certainly don’t want your bright bathroom lights illuminating everything while you’re trying to drown out the outside world — so set the mood with a little (or a lot of) candlelight. Our favorite? Our new Candle Therapy candle holder set! You’ll also want to add your favorite chill tunes, so be sure to select an appropriate playlist to promote a zen-like atmosphere.

4. Unplug.

You know how spas discourage you from using your cell phones during your visit? Well, your at-home spa day should follow the same rules — a little break from technology can really help you recalibrate. So turn your phone, tablets, and other electronic devices off and stash them outside of the bathroom so you aren’t tempted to check them.

5. Scalp Massage.

We can all agree that one of the best parts about getting your hair professionally done is the scalp massage, right? But somehow, digging your own fingers into your scalp just doesn’t cut it. Enter the Briogeo Scalp Revival Stimulating Therapy Massager, a handheld massager that helps increase scalp circulation and stimulation, which supports healthy scalp care.

You can use it on a dry scalp or pair it with your favorite Briogeo shampoo, oil, or treatment for a divine massage therapy experience - we love using it with the Scalp Revival micro-exfoliating shampoo or the charcoal + tea tree scalp treatment for when your scalp really needs some extra TLC. Simply hold the massager in your palm, gently press the rubber tips to your scalp with medium pressure and massage away. Just be sure to avoid large circular motions, which can tangle your mane. Once you're done treating your scalp to a therapeutic massage, comb away the day's stress and tension to rebalance and restore your scalp and hair harmony with our rose quartz crystal energy comb.

6. Detox Water.

Proper hydration starts from the inside out, so make your at-home spa day feel like a proper spa experience with a detoxifying beverage. Fill a pitcher with cucumber and lemon slices (wash their skins first), some mint leaves, and filtered water. It will taste most flavorful if you let this sit overnight, so be sure to plan ahead. Bonus: This concoction also helps fight bloating. Win-win!

7. Hair Mask.

If there’s one thing everybody suffers from equally in winter, it’s dry, damaged and lifeless hair. Thankfully, our Don’t Despair, Repair! deep conditioning mask works in mere minutes to restore essential hydration and natural vibrancy to dry, brittle, and otherwise lackluster locks. It delivers an optimal blend of transformative nutrients from B vitamins, rosehip and argan oils, algae, and biotin to replenish damaged hair to a shiny, healthy-looking and lustrous state. After shampooing your hair (which you might want to do in the shower prior to your luxurious bath time), massage the mask into your hair, and rinse out after five to 10 minutes.

If you’re really feeling yourself and want an extra deep conditioning sesh, give our Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep conditioning hair cap system a try. Your hair will be so soft and shiny afterwards!

8. Face Mask.

Your hair likely isn’t the only dull + dry thing this season — your face is probably begging for some extra TLC too. Select the appropriate face mask for your skin type (whether you have oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin or a combination) and let it work its magic. Not only will you find über relaxing, but it will help cleanse your skin, unclog pores, reduce inflammation and redness, improve acne, and create a glowing look that will leave your friends wondering what high-end spa you went to. Our current obsession is the new Summer Fridays R + R Mask

9. Lock it In.

There’s one last step to the perfect at-home spa day pampering — and that’s locking in all the moisture you’ve created. Make sure to lather on a high-quality body crème or oil, such as coconut, jojoba, rose hip or argan. This will seal your soak in and leave you feeling soft and radiant for the rest of the day. Our go-to product to lock in all that well-deserved moisture is the Kopari coconut melt. And voilà! Now you have all the components to create the perfect at-home spa day.
